Cutting edge housing developments seem to keep landing in my inbox this week. I thinks it’s because Jeana and I have been attracting it. We’ve put it out to the universe that we will be renovating a building we’ve yet to find or buy in order to create an inspiring living space and passive income source. Here’s the email I got today:

Montreal design team wins national eco-housing competition!

This week it was announced that the Montreal design team, Abondance Montreal, has been named as one the winning teams in a national competition to create zero energy housing.

The EQuilibrium sustainable housing competition is a creation of the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC).

As part of this initiative, the Abondance Montreal team has worked for over six months to develop a triplex that annually generates as much energy as it consumes.

The team is a who’s who of Montreal green design experts: EcoCite Developments, Les Constructions Sodero Inc., Studio MMA Architects, Pageau Morel and associates inc. engineers, and Prof. Michel Bernier from Ecole Polytechnique de Montreal.

The project consists of three 2-bedroom EcoCondos in a Montreal-style walkup. Energy is generated through the use of geoexchange, solar electric (photovoltaic) and solar hot water technologies. The building uses the latest in energy efficient building design, while ensuring that components are all readily available from local suppliers.

More than just energy efficient, the homes will also be water and material efficient, and be finished using only healthy, ecological materials.

One unit of the housing project will be used as a demonstration suite for a year after construction, allowing the public, members of the construction industry, and the media to visit the building and learn more about sustainable, energy efficient design. Another 18 EcoCondos that will be “zero energy ready” will be built on the same site, starting fall 2007

Construction on the triplex will start this spring, and the building will be complete and ready for occupancy and demonstration this fall.

ABONDANCE MONTRÉAL ÉQUIPE GAGNANTE DU CONCOURS NATIONALE DE LOGEMENT ÉCOLOGIQUE.

L’equipe Abondance Montréal fait partie de l’une des 12 équipes canadiennes qui ont été choisies pour participer à l’initiative EQuilibrium soit la conception de maison écologique et écoénergétique de la société canadienne d’hypothèques et de logement (SCHL).

Pendant plus de 6 mois, l’équipe a travaillé à la conception d’ un triplex qui va produire annuellement autant d’énergie qu’il en consomme.

L’équipe est le résultat d’un partenariat composés de: Les Développements EcoCité, Les Constructions Sodero Inc., l’atelier d’architectes Studio MMA, les ingénieurs en électricité et en mécaniques PMA (Pageau Morel et associés ) et le professeur Michel Bernier de l’École Polytechnique de Montréal.

Abondance Montréal va construire un triplex hautement écoénergétique et efficace à Verdun, juste au sud du centre-ville de Montréal. Cette équipe fait appel à un vaste éventail de techniques et de technologies écoénergétiques dont des systèmes à énergie renouvelable. On obtient ainsi un immeuble pouvant accueillir trois familles qui produiront autant d’énergie qu’elles en consommeront au cour d’ une année. En même temps, tous des aspects verts de la construction offriront à ses occupants un milieu de vie confortable, sain, abordable, écologique, et beau.

Le projet d’ Abondance Montréal se compose de trois unités EcoCondos (4½) dans un triplex qui sera construit à montréal. L’énergie est produite par l’utilisation des technologies de géothermie, panneaux solaires électriques (photovoltaïque) et panneaux solaires d’eau chaude (thermique).

Le logement du rez-de-chaussée servira pendant un an, à la fin de la construction, d’unité de démonstration afin d’illustrer ce qu’est un bâtiment de conception éco énergétique. Cette démonstration s’adressera au grand public, aux gens de l’industrie et aux médias, tous seront conviés à une visite. Un monitorage de la consommation énergétique des appareilles permettra de suivre la consommation de chacun.

La construction du triplex commencera ce printemps, et le bâtiment sera complété et prêt pour occupation et pour la démonstration à l’automne 2007.
